Rung'eto Farmers Cooperative Society oversees Karimikui Washing Station. It represents over 1,000 smallholder farmers who cultivate coffee on small plots averaging 0.5 acres.
Location:
Karimikui is situated in Kirinyaga County, nestled on the southern slopes of Mount Kenya. The area benefits from high altitudes of 1,600–1,800 meters and fertile volcanic soils ideal for premium coffee production.
Cultivation Practices:
Farmers primarily grow SL28 and SL34 varieties, known for their high quality and disease resistance. Most coffee is intercropped with other plants like bananas, macadamia, and maize, contributing to biodiversity.
Processing:
Karimikui Washing Station uses the fully washed process to highlight the coffee’s bright acidity and complex flavors. The meticulous fermentation, washing, and drying practices ensure a clean, vibrant cup profile.
Community Impact:
